Our Next, Best Hope for the Classroom? The Surface RT
The Surface RT, Microsoft's latest endeavour in the realm of tablets runs a variant of Windows 8 designed specifically for ARM processors. While this leaves behind many of the legacy applications designed for Windows, the tablet comes with several key pluses for the classroom. Click past the break for the full article.
Killed-Off Legacy Support Is A Good Thing, Too
While technology enthusiasts are a little alarmed that Windows RT doesn't provide support for legacy applications, this is a legitimate limitation in the hardware of the device. This limitation, however, can be used as an advantage. Killed-off legacy support also means that badware that often plagues Windows-based systems of the less tech-savvy.
On the Surface RT, Applications can also only be installed via the Windows Store, meaning that third-party websites that often carry much of the badware are dropped from the equation entirely.
Microsoft Office is Included
As funding in education is often cripplingly limited, it's vital to save and take advantage of any money-saving opportunity which presents itself. Though schools and other large organisations are already capable of purchasing the Microsoft Office suite in bulk to cut down on costs, Microsoft has included its most-used suite of software free of charge.
Account Controls: Microsoft's Biggest Ace?
In addition to offering a product that already makes it difficult to install undesired software, Microsoft's Account Controls are unparalleled by any competitor today. Account Controls make it possible to lock-down the device to a point where a student would be unable to tamper with the settings, installed applications and so on.
